About FreeCell Solitaire

FreeCell Solitaire puts every card face up from the start. The challenge is making room to reach the cards you need, using four temporary spaces to rearrange the board.

Hints, undo, and a guided practice deal are available when you need a hand.

Your goal

Move all 52 cards to the four foundations: the suit piles above the columns. Each foundation starts empty. Add an ace, then cards of the same suit in order: 2–10, jack, queen, king. Complete all four foundations to win.

Before
After
Add the 3 of hearts to the heart foundation. It covers the 2; the ace stays underneath.

Only a single, uncovered card can move to a foundation. Cards placed there stay there unless you use Undo.

Build the columns

The eight columns of overlapping cards are called the tableau. Hearts and diamonds are red; clubs and spades are black. Place a card on one of the opposite color that is one step higher: a red 6 goes on a black 7.

One column: red 6 on black 7, then black 5 on red 6.

Only uncovered cards are available individually. Moving one exposes the card beneath it. Any card can fill an empty column; it does not have to be a king.

All cards begin in the columns. There is no deck to draw from and no hidden cards to turn over.

Use the free cells

The four free cells above the columns are temporary holding spaces. Each holds one card. Move an uncovered card into an empty cell to reach the card beneath it.

A card in a cell can move back to a column if it fits, or onto its foundation when it is next in order. This frees the cell for another card.

Move a sequence

You can drag a descending, alternating-color sequence together if there is enough empty space to move its cards one at a time. Lolo handles those individual moves for you.

With two empty cells, you can move the 7–6–5 sequence above onto a red 8: park the 5 and 6, move the 7, then put the 6 and 5 back onto it.

Empty columns provide extra working space too. A column you are moving into cannot also count as temporary space. If a sequence will not move, free a cell or another column, or move fewer cards.

Tips

  • Before filling a cell, look for a way to empty it again.
  • Free a column to give yourself more room to rearrange cards.
  • Look for buried aces and low cards, and plan how to uncover them.
